Edmund Lane Curlee, Jr.

ISLE OF HOPE - Surrounded by members of his family, Edmund Lane Curlee, Jr. passed away at his home on September 16, 2015 after a long illness at the age of 79.

He was born on September 17, 1935 in Greensboro, NC. When he was five, his family moved to Savannah after his father purchased the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company. As a youth, he was an avid golfer and at one point held the city junior championship. He graduated high school from Darlington Preparatory School in Rome, GA and subsequently attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for his freshman and sophomore years. He then transferred to the University of Georgia where he was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and went on to graduate with a degree in accounting from UGA’s business school. After college he served six months in the U.S. Army at Ft. Chaffee, Arkansas followed by a stint in the National Guard. He then returned to Savannah and eventually became the managing partner at the CPA firm of Lazard Curlee and Co., and was fortunate to have taken a lot of pride and joy in working with and helping his clients. He was a member of and attended the Isle of Hope United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Savannah Golf Club and the Oglethorpe Club. He and his wife, Gray Rowland were married after they finished their junior year at the University of Georgia and celebrated their 59th anniversary on June 9th of this year. They reminisced of their many happy years together; especially enjoying raising their children and watching their grandchildren grow up. They also were blessed with a beautiful view of the Intracoastal Waterway that they enjoyed from their home on Isle of Hope. They relished traveling and went on numerous cruises to unique places around the world.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edmund Lane Curlee, Sr. and his mother, Helen Horner Curlee. He is survived by his wife, Gray Rowland; his son, Edmund “Lane” Curlee, III (Phyllis); his daughter, Lisa Gray Maier (Chris); his grandchildren, Cameron Rowland Curlee, Edmund Lane Curlee, IV, and Grayson Rowland Maier; and by his brother, David Randolph Curlee (Val).

Funeral services will be held at the Isle of Hope United Methodist Church, 412 Parkersburg Road at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2015, followed by a reception in the church fellowship hall. Burial will follow in Bonaventure Cemetery.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Savannah as well as other personal care givers. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions to the Isle of Hope United Methodist Church, 412 Parkersburg Road, Savannah, GA 31406.

Lane, I will never forget the man who gave me my first job! Those were some great days at the old Lazard, Lazard, Curlee & Bennett. I learned so much from Ed and Randy. It was said that the firm held together because Ed and Randy were so opposite...and that they were. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Remember, death leaves a heartache no one can heal, but love leaves a memory that no one can steal.
